In a world often divided, a remarkable love story unfolds, bridging the gaps that once separated communities. John and Agnes Carberry, a couple whose journey spans over six decades, have quietly written a love story that defies the norms and challenges of their time.
Imagine a time before integrated education was even a concept in Northern Ireland. In Jordanstown, a school emerged as a beacon of hope, offering a unique opportunity for Catholic and Protestant deaf children to learn and grow together. John, with his Catholic roots in west Belfast, and Agnes, from a Protestant background in the Silent Valley, found a common language in sign language, a language that knew no religious boundaries.
"It's incredible to think that we were breaking barriers before the rest of Northern Ireland even considered it," John reflects. "In the deaf community, religion was never a source of division. It simply didn't exist."
Their love story, a testament to unity and resilience, is now shared with the world through the award-winning documentary, "A Quiet Love." This film, Ireland's first feature in Irish Sign Language (ISL), showcases not just their journey but also that of two other remarkable couples, each with their own unique narrative.
"A Quiet Love" sheds light on a period often overshadowed by conflict - The Troubles. Through the eyes of John and Agnes, we witness the challenges faced by the deaf community during this tumultuous time. They recount the disapproval from families and society, and the unique struggles of navigating a world filled with bombings and gunfire without the sense of hearing.
John explains their motivation for sharing their story: "We wanted to bring attention to the struggles faced by the deaf community during The Troubles. It had a profound impact on our social lives and our independence was greatly affected."
But amidst the darkness, John and Agnes emphasize the power of love. "We've had numerous documentaries and books about the hardships, but where are the stories of hope and love?" John questions. "What those narratives brought was hatred. We wanted to show that love, peace, and equality can prevail."
The film, a collaboration between deaf and hearing individuals, marks a significant milestone in Irish cinema. It incorporates both ISL and British Sign Language, a fact that John finds particularly exciting: "People are often surprised to learn that there are two distinct sign languages in Ireland. They are languages in their own right, and it's wonderful to see them represented on the big screen."
Agnes adds, "Having our languages showcased in this way is a dream come true."
"A Quiet Love" captures the essence of three extraordinary love stories. Alongside John and Agnes, we meet Kathy and Michelle, an LGBTQI+ couple navigating parenthood with deaf and hearing children, and Seán and Deyanna, a deaf boxer and his hearing partner facing a life-altering decision.
The documentary, directed by Garry Keane, was a labor of love for the entire team. Anne Heffernan and Seán Herlihy, co-producers from Curious North Productions, describe it as a highlight of their careers.
Anne, when asked about her decision to document these love stories, said, "What moved me the most was the intimacy between deaf couples and the beauty of sign language. The eye contact between these couples is a sight to behold, and it inspired the theme of our film."
The film has received critical acclaim and numerous awards, but the true reward for the team has been the response from the deaf community. Anne shares, "To see deaf individuals experiencing the film, feeling seen and represented, is an incredibly special moment."
For Agnes and John, the film is not just a chance to share their journey but also an opportunity to educate and bridge understanding. "At the end of the day, we're just people. We have relationships, we have our moments of joy and happiness, just like anyone else. We want people to understand that being deaf is just one aspect of who we are."
So, what's the secret to their enduring love? John smiles and reveals, "Four simple letters: L-O-V-E. Love has always been our guiding force."
