Beachfront Fitness Revolution: Plans for a Free Outdoor Gym Take Shape
Get ready for a beachfront fitness boost! Plans for a free outdoor gym at a popular beach are moving forward, with the potential to open as early as next year. If approved, this exciting initiative will bring a range of high-quality cardio, strength, and cross-training equipment to the seafront in Walmer, right next to the existing Roman Landings Adventure Golf course.
The idea first emerged in May 2023, with the proposal to install a variety of apparatus along the town's promenade. But after thoughtful discussions with industry experts, the decision was made to place the equipment in a more accessible and socially engaging location, increasing the chances of people training together and reaping the benefits of group exercise.
Now, the Walmer Town Council (WTC) has submitted plans to the Dover District Council (DDC) for this exciting new gym. The Whitfield-based Smith Group, the architects behind the project, have outlined a range of benefits for the community.
"This facility will feature a range of high-quality cardio, strength, and cross-training equipment, designed to replicate the benefits of an indoor gym in an open-air coastal environment," the firm explains. "The emphasis will be on multi-functional, inclusive, and accessible equipment, ensuring usability across diverse user groups and encouraging year-round participation."
The gym will be freely available to those over the age of 13, promoting physical activity and social interaction. Discussions are underway with DDC to secure a lease agreement for the beach area, and a public consultation conducted by WTC in April 2024 revealed overwhelming support for the project, with 87% of respondents indicating they would use the outdoor facility.
The benefits of regular exercise are well-known, and this initiative provides a valuable opportunity for people to engage in physical activity without the cost of a private gym. However, it's worth noting that the location is in a flood risk zone, which could be a concern for some.
