Unveiling the Child Cancer Scam: A Global Network of Deception
A shocking investigation by the BBC Eye team and World of Secrets podcast has exposed a sinister global network of scammers exploiting children with cancer. The documentary, 'The Child Cancer Scam', and its accompanying six-part season of the BBC's World of Secrets podcast, reveal how desperate parents are being deceived and manipulated. The story begins with a YouTube advert, leading reporter Simi Jolaoso to a fundraising campaign for a young girl, which had raised over half a million dollars. But this was just the tip of the iceberg.
Through geolocation, social media, and facial recognition, the BBC Eye investigation identified 15 families whose children appeared in these videos. Nine families, in particular, were the focus of the probe, with children from Ukraine, Colombia, Mexico, and the Philippines. These families claim they received nothing from the $4 million raised in their children's names, despite the emotional videos and campaigns produced by the same scam network. The children were subjected to distressing filming, with some encouraged to cry and one boy even brought to tears by onions under his eyes. The scam network's key figure, Erez Hadari, an Israeli man living in Canada, remains unresponsive to the BBC's findings.
The investigation uncovers several organizations, registered in Israel, Canada, and the US, presenting themselves as charities. One of the most active among them is Chance Letikva (Chance for Hope). Despite the children's deaths, campaigns for Khalil in the Philippines and Hector in Mexico still receive donations. The Israeli Corporations Authority warns of severe consequences if founders are found using entities for illegal activities, including denial of registration and a ban from the sector. The UK's Charity Commission advises donors to be cautious, urging them to check charities' registration and contact regulators if in doubt.
