Florida’s coaching search just got a whole lot more interesting. Multiple reports suggest that the Gators are now aggressively pursuing Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall, a name quickly rising through the college football coaching ranks. But here’s where it gets complicated: Florida isn’t the only SEC team making a run at him.
According to FootballScoop, the University of Florida has shifted its attention toward Sumrall, the 43-year-old head coach who’s led Tulane’s football program to national relevance. However, the Gators’ administration faces stiff competition from Auburn, and possibly even Ole Miss—particularly if Lane Kiffin decides to leave Oxford. In other words, Florida might need to pull out all the stops to land its preferred candidate.
And that’s exactly what they’ve been doing. John Brice of FootballScoop reports that the Gators recently enlisted some high-profile help: none other than Urban Meyer. That’s right—the same Urban Meyer who guided Florida to two national championships reportedly reached out to Sumrall to help bridge the gap and make the program’s pitch more persuasive. It’s a move that demonstrates how serious Florida’s leadership is about closing the deal.
While Florida may be trailing slightly in the early stages, it has made substantial progress with Sumrall. The former Kentucky linebacker has built a reputation as a sharp defensive mind and program-builder, previously leading Troy to success before transforming Tulane into a powerhouse contender within the Group of Five. Sources told FootballScoop that Meyer was one of several Gator representatives tapped to speak directly with Sumrall about the job, emphasizing that he would have full authority over program decisions—including staffing.
Here’s where things get financially intriguing: Florida’s current offer reportedly doesn’t rival the eye-popping contract the school was prepared to give Lane Kiffin, which was believed to be between $13 and $15 million annually. That deal also was rumored to include over $20 million in NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) support. However, Florida’s leadership is still ready to offer its new head coach around $10 million per year, along with performance-based bonuses and built-in incentives. It’s a competitive package, even if not record-breaking.
Sumrall’s decision could come very soon—potentially before the weekend concludes, according to Swamp247. Timing is crucial: Tulane remains in the hunt for a College Football Playoff berth as the highest-ranked Group of Five team. If the Green Wave secure wins against Charlotte and in the American Athletic Conference Championship, they could clinch a historic CFP spot. If that happens, Sumrall’s resume would shine even brighter, giving him additional leverage in any coaching negotiations.
Sumrall’s journey to this point has been remarkable. After beginning as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Kentucky, he took a coaching position at the University of San Diego before joining Tulane as defensive coordinator. From 2015 to 2017, he worked at Troy University as associate head coach and linebackers coach, then jumped to the SEC in 2018 with Ole Miss. Now, as Tulane’s successful head coach, Sumrall has become one of the most sought-after names in college football.
Meanwhile, Florida continues to evaluate other coaching possibilities, just in case. Among those still under consideration is Washington’s Jedd Fisch, a Florida alumnus who also boasts an impressive track record of rebuilding programs.
So the big question remains: will Sumrall take the leap to Gainesville, or stay and lead Tulane into uncharted territory? And perhaps more importantly—should Florida fans be excited about this hire, or cautious about another coaching gamble? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments: is Jon Sumrall the right man to revive Gator football?
