Protecting Lagos' Soil: A Call to Action for Residents
The Lagos State Government has issued a crucial call to action, urging residents to safeguard and wisely utilize the soil, a vital component of nature's gift to humanity. This message was delivered by Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during a press conference in Alausa, Ikeja, as part of the 2025 World Soil Day celebrations.
Wahab emphasized the soil's fundamental role in sustaining life and promoting environmental health. He stated, 'Healthy soils are the cornerstone of healthy cities. They provide essential ecosystem services, support biodiversity, and ensure food security. Without fertile soil, our ability to sustain life and build resilience is severely compromised.'
The commissioner highlighted the need for careful planning and management in Lagos, a bustling metropolis and the nation's commercial hub. He noted, 'In a city like Lagos, where economic activities thrive, we must prioritize the protection and wise use of soil resources.'
To achieve this, Wahab encouraged residents to engage in urban agriculture, promoting food security and maintaining ecological balance. He warned against anthropogenic activities like deforestation, urbanization, and soil sealing, which can have detrimental effects on the environment. These activities, he said, must be managed carefully to protect the public interest.
Additionally, Wahab advocated for the continuous greening of urban spaces, emphasizing the importance of preserving soil organic matter in wetland areas for carbon sequestration. He stated, 'The soil is the largest carbon pool on land, offering a significant buffer capacity. Protecting our soil and the environment is a collective responsibility, ensuring the well-being of our planet and future generations.'
The commissioner concluded by urging residents to avoid practices that harm the soil, such as indiscriminate oil disposal and improper waste management. He emphasized that these actions directly impact the quality of soil, water, and other essential resources for human existence.
