Ithaca College's Head Football Coach, Michael Toerper, is Departing for Cornell University
ITHACA, N.Y. – Ithaca College has announced that head football coach Michael Toerper will be leaving to take on the defensive coordinator role at Cornell University. Toerper's leadership has been instrumental in the Bombers' recent success, including two Liberty League championships, an NCAA postseason appearance, and an undefeated regular season in his first year as head coach. His impact on the program has been profound, with a focus on developing student-athletes and raising the standard of Ithaca College football.
Director of intercollegiate athletics Aaron Bouyea expressed gratitude for Toerper's contributions, stating, 'We are grateful for Mike's leadership and the competitive excellence he brought to our football program. Under his guidance, the Bombers achieved championship-level success, developed numerous award-winning student-athletes, and continued to raise the standard of Ithaca College football. We wish him all the best in this next opportunity.'
Toerper himself shared his appreciation for the time spent at Ithaca College, saying, 'I am incredibly grateful for my time at Ithaca College and for the opportunity to lead this program. Showing up to work every day to develop these excited young men has been a privilege. The seven seasons we've spent here have created some of the fondest memories that my family and I will ever experience. I deeply appreciate all the effort and sacrifice from everyone who has helped this program accomplish great things together. The future is bright on South Hill, and we will always be supporting the Bombers!'
Toerper's departure leaves the program in a strong position, having built sustained momentum over the past four seasons. The Bombers are well-positioned for continued success as they transition to a new chapter. During his tenure, Toerper achieved an impressive overall winning percentage of 35-10 (.778), including a 23-2 mark within Liberty League play. Seven student-athletes were named Liberty League Players of the Year, and the team secured six All-America honors over the past four seasons.
In 2023, the Bombers repeated as Liberty League champions and secured a postseason berth with a 9-3 record. This fall, they posted an 8-2 record, culminating in a victory in the 66th Cortaca Jug Game, their first win in the rivalry since 2022. Toerper's defensive expertise is evident in the team's consistent performance, never allowing more than 20 points per game in a season over his seven-year tenure.
The search for the next head coach will begin immediately, ensuring the program's continued success and excellence.
