Paul Mescal & Jessie Buckley's Irish Premiere: A Night to Remember for 'Hamnet' (2026)

Lights, camera, premiere! The highly anticipated film Hamnet saw its stars, Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, grace the red carpet at Dublin's Lighthouse Cinema, igniting excitement for what promises to be a powerful cinematic experience. Joining them were the visionary director and co-screenwriter Chloé Zhao, alongside author Maggie O’Farrell, who masterfully adapted her own award-winning novel for the screen.

With whispers of potential Oscar nods swirling, both Buckley and Mescal have already secured Golden Globe nominations for their captivating performances in Hamnet. Buckley, the 35-year-old actress from Killarney, is in the running for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama), while Mescal, hailing from Maynooth, is nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Hamnet reimagines the life of William Shakespeare and his family, a story that delves into the depths of grief and the enduring power of love. The film, set to hit Irish cinemas on January 9th, follows William Shakespeare, portrayed by Mescal, his wife Agnes, played by Buckley, and the tragic loss of their son, Hamnet, during the bubonic plague in 1596.

Buckley's portrayal of a grieving mother is particularly poignant, as she navigates the aftermath of her son's death while her husband retreats into his work, eventually writing what would become Hamlet in the years following the tragedy.

And this is the part most people miss... The role took on a profound new meaning for Buckley, who has since welcomed her first child. She shared with The New York Times, "When I was filming Hamnet, I deeply wanted to become a mother... And it was such a gift to move through this woman and her motherhood and her love and her loss before I became a mother myself.”

The film has already garnered significant attention, earning just over $4 million (€3.4 million) in the US since its late-November release.

Hamnet is already being touted as a Best Picture frontrunner, standing alongside films like One Battle After Another and Sinners, a position solidified by its six Golden Globe nominations. Mescal's previous achievements include an Oscar nomination for Aftersun in 2022 and a Bafta win for his breakout role in Normal People.

But here's where it gets controversial... Do you think the film's early success is justified? What aspects of the story resonate with you the most? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
