A Rising Star's Quest: Repeating History in F2
In the world of motorsports, a young talent is poised to rewrite history. Meet Rafael Camara, the 2021 CIK-FIA European Karting Champion, who is now set to conquer the 2026 F2 title. But here's where it gets intriguing: Camara is following a path blazed by his predecessors, Gabriel Bortoleto and Leonardo Fornaroli, who both won the F3 championship before him. Can he replicate their success and become the next F2 champion?
Camara, affectionately known as 'Rafa,' is a 20-year-old Brazilian with a unique story. His journey into motorsport began with his older brother, who initially gave it a try. However, it was Rafa who truly embraced the sport, and his talent soon became evident. With a career that has blossomed in recent years, he is now the name on everyone's lips in F2.
But what sets Camara apart? Perhaps it's his genetic connection to the sport. His maternal grandmother, Niege Rossiter, was a touring car racer in the early 1960s, competing on the streets of Recife. Her passion and talent were undeniable, and she even received an offer to race at Interlagos, the heart of Brazilian motorsport. However, her path took a different turn, and she chose the kitchen over the track. Today, we might see a different outcome, but for Camara, her legacy lives on.
"Before I started racing, it was a hidden gem in our family's history," Camara shares. "But as I delved deeper, I discovered her helmet, trophies, and photos. It was a dangerous yet thrilling era, and she always supported my journey."
Camara's talent caught the eye of Ferrari, who invited him to their scouting camp and world finals in 2021. It was a turning point in his career, leading him to join the Ferrari Driver Academy. From there, he moved to Maranello, Italy, and began his journey in car racing.
His first taste of car racing was with the dominant team, Prema Racing, in 2022. However, COVID-19 disrupted his progress, forcing him to miss his debut weekend and later a German round. Despite these setbacks, Camara finished third in both German and Italian F4, with his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, taking the crowns. But Camara was determined to learn and improve, and by the end of the season, he felt he had made significant strides.
In 2023, Camara and Antonelli graduated to Formula Regional, once again with Prema. This time, Camara finished fifth, while Antonelli claimed the championship. The following year, Camara stayed with Prema, and it was his turn to shine, earning the 2024 Formula Regional European title. It was a learning curve, as he explains, "I had to manage the bad weekends and ensure I was doing things the right way."
For the step up to F3, Camara made a bold move, leaving Prema for Trident, a team he describes as another family. With their support, he dominated the 2025 F3 season, winning the title with a round to spare. It was a surprise even to him, given the unpredictability of the new Dallara car.
Now, Camara is ready to take on the challenge of F2 with Invicta Racing. He's excited about the team's history, having learned that it was once the base for Emerson Fittipaldi and Ayrton Senna. With an experienced engineer, Pau Rivera, by his side, Camara is focused on controlling what he can and preparing for a successful season. And while an F1 runout with Ferrari might be on the horizon, he knows his priority is to deliver in F2.
Will Camara become the next F2 champion? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: his journey is a testament to hard work, talent, and the power of legacy.
