Imagine a world where you can still hail a ride like the old days, but with a modern twist! Uber, the rideshare giant, is bringing back the taxi line, but with a tech-free twist.
The Taxi Line Returns, But With a Tech-Free Twist!
Uber has announced a plan to install physical kiosks at airports, starting with LaGuardia in New York City. This new feature allows travelers to request an Uber ride without downloading the app, reminiscent of the good old days of waiting in line for a taxi.
The first kiosk will be located at Terminal C, with future rollouts planned for hotels, ports, and international airports in the coming months. Uber sees this as a perfect solution for international visitors without local data plans.
But here's where it gets interesting...
Simply walk up to the kiosk, enter your destination, and start your ride. The kiosk prints a paper receipt with your trip details, making it as straightforward as possible. No app, no hassle!
However, the timing of the first kiosk's debut and the additional rollout remains unclear. Uber has not yet provided an official statement, leaving us curious about the exact dates.
And this is the part most people miss...
With major events like the World Cup scheduled for next year, Uber sees a strong opportunity to expand its business, especially with the influx of international travelers.
The company plans to own and maintain the kiosks initially, but the operational model may evolve over time.
But wait, there's more!
Uber also announced other holiday travel-friendly changes, including a new Uber Shuttle at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. This shuttle service is already available at LaGuardia and JFK, making all three major New York City-area airports accessible via Uber.
Additionally, Uber has introduced a new feature that allows users to tip their drivers from the lock screen of their phones before the trip ends. With tipping just a tap away, riders can show their appreciation in the moment, and early pilots have shown an increase in tips for drivers.
Looking ahead...
Earlier this year, Uber announced its plans to launch autonomous taxis in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2026. In collaboration with Lucid and Nuro Inc., Uber is developing a robotaxi based on the Lucid Gravity SUV, which will be exclusive to Uber.
While the program will initially launch in the Bay Area, Uber aims to issue more than 20,000 autonomous taxis in multiple locations within six years, with the vehicle accessible to customers through the Uber app.
